Cryptids of North America

Fig 1768a. NeoPangea

Format: Interactive Installation c.2023

Touch the unusual history of the Cryptids, creatures of hearsay often swept under the rug, and who rarely stay  there.

Cryptids are elusive creatures that have been the subject of many tall tales. What if we told you that we caught a few? Well, digitally. Would you be too terrified to touch one? Sightings of creatures like Bigfoot, the Chupacabra, Lake Monsters, the Mothman, and other Cryptids have been a part of native folklore and urban legend for centuries, and our research and development team decided to turn these human encounters into an interactive touch and play experience. To share in the telling of tales, we created a digital solution that gives Cryptids a new home at our headquarters, combining a 3D printed, handheld statuettes and an interactive computing table which displays facts and folklore about North America’s most elusive fauna.

The progressive table technology uses capacitive, touchscreen interfaces, interacting with an object response hardware that is recognized by the internal Tangible Engine software. Inside the 3D printed figurines of the Cryptids, are the souls of their victims, and inside those souls, is where we installed the object-response hardware that triggers the program software. Once triggered, animated display experiences play alive. Any human can drag and drop their 3D printed object across the touchscreen, appearing to magically trigger visual storytelling elements of the Cryptids. Playfully experience interactive maps, background history, even get snarled at, proving time and again it pays to be curious at our offices. But, be careful when you touch our stuff, it bites and is sometimes violent. We’ve warned you.
